GOP Candidate In Recall Race Submits Signatures

DENVER (AP) – A former Pueblo police officer challenging a Colorado state senator in a recall over new gun restrictions has turned in signatures to get on the ballot.

George Rivera dropped off the signatures Friday at the Colorado Secretary of State’s office and says he’s turning in about 1,500. That’s 500 more signatures than what’s required to get on the ballot but election officials still have to certify the signatures.

Rivera retired in 2005 as deputy chief of the Pueblo Police Department. He’s never run for office.

He’s a Republican hoping to unseat Democratic Sen. Angela Giron over her support for gun legislation that expands background checks and limits the size of ammunition magazines. Democratic Senate President John Morse is also facing a recall.

The election is Sept. 10.
